Preserving the past
This is a photo of two of my great-great-grandparents (my paternal grandmother's paternal grandparents, to be exact). They were alive in the mid-1800s - how cool is that? Henry and Mary. I spent some time yesterday 'cleaning up' this and other photos for my uncle who is writing his memoirs. I used the Picasa retouch tool and started with creases in the photos and other damage. Then I started evening up the background and fixing a few spots on the clothes and faces. I then realized I was crossing from cleaning to 'improving', from authenticity to blandness, from truth to a mask, so I stopped, and it made me wonder how we know where that line is for ourselves.
